Judge Issues Temporary Order Suspending Callaway County Sheriff From Office
A judge has signed a temporary order prohibiting Clay Chism from acting as Callaway County Sheriff.
On Friday, the Missouri Department of Public Safety suspended Chism’s peace officer license, according to a complaint filed on June 9.
According to the complaint filed with the Missouri Administrative Hearing Commission, Chism allegedly showed up to work multiple times under the influence of alcohol.
Following the complaint, the Callaway County prosecuting attorney filed a petition on Friday to remove Chism from elected office, and Judge Brouck Jacobs issued an emergency temporary order prohibiting Chism from acting as sheriff.
Chism was arrested in Moberly in October 2022 where he is accused of driving while intoxicated.
He has pleaded not guilty to DWI and resisting arrest, both misdemeanors.
In a statement to KWWR/KXEO news Sheriff Chism said “My legal team of attorneys is working through the due process and look forward to quickly and appropriately resolving this legal matter accordingly. All facts, including my defense, will be heard in the appropriate setting.
I am on a leave of absence. Darryl Maylee is acting in my place.”
A jury trial is set for 9am August 10, 2023.
